Disgrifiad

The 4th issue of the Welsh Medical Gazette was printed in April 1970. The front cover shows a red Welsh dragon holding a shield with a depiction of the Rod of Asclepius, a symbol associated with medicine and healing. The Gazette was founded as vehicle to disseminate news and for medical practitioners from all over Wales to be able to express their views.

The image two shows an editorial explaining that this is a special edition marking the centenary of the Cardiff Medical Society; recent medical appointments; and an article by the secretary of Cardiff Medical Society, Malcolm Graham, on the society’s activities. At that time, the society had over 350 members with different medical specialism. The society met monthly at the Dental School. The opposite page has an advert for a drug.

The image three displays an article by Donald Anderson explaining the situation regarding health back when the Cardiff Medical Society was founded in 1870. This includes population figures for Cardiff and causes of death amongst the population.

The image four features an article by Eric Payne on the history of the Cardiff Medical Society, focusing on the early years of its existence. According to the article the society’s history is closely linked to that of the Cardiff Infirmary and the Medical School. The sense of fellowship between members of the society increased following the advent of the National Health Service after the Second World War.

The image five contains two articles reflecting on the society’s activities during the past year. The upper article details the scientific papers that were presented and the guests who presented them and includes a summary of the key points. The lower article reports on the proceedings of the Annual Dinner held on 11th March 1970 at the Angel Hotel to mark the society’s centenary.

The images six and seven show the photographs from the Annual Dinner held on 11th March 1970 at the Angel Hotel to mark the society’s centenary and an article by the president of the Cardiff Medical Society, William Phillips, concerning the future of the society. He emphasises the need for continuing education in medicine. He believes the strength of the society lies in the social aspects, such as coffee and conversation before the meetings. He wants the society to have its own base which they can use for events.

The image eight provides information on the founders of the society, particularly key founding member and former president Dr W T Edwards.

The image 9 shows the last page of the booklet which outlines the events planned for the coming months, April and May 1970.

The Cardiff Medical Society was formed in 1870. It aims to encourage the advancement of medical knowledge and promote the welfare of the medical profession. The society is run by a committee of volunteers who organise a variety of educational events for society members, such as talks, lectures, paper presentations and discussions on topics relevant to the medical field with leading figures in the field. The society also holds social events, including an annual dinner. Every year the society awards a prize to a medical student studying in Wales for some research they have conducted. Initially, the society struggled to attract members. Today, the society is thriving and more than 400 medical practitioners in Cardiff and the surrounding area are members of the society who meet on a monthly basis.
