Hello, I'm Belle from Discovery and it's the 12th of March 2026 and I'm here with Ben at the Discovery 60th anniversary event.
So, hi Ben, please can you start by telling me about your connection to Discovery?
00:00:14 Ben
I came to know about Discovery while I was doing my master's degree in 2022 and so I signed up to be an ambassador at a point in time and I was successful with that application and so I represented Discovery at events, at events that stalls needed to be set up and talk about Discovery to people. I also conducted interviews for a few people who wanted to volunteer, blah, blah, blah. So yeah.
00:00:47 Belle
So, was there any particular projects you got involved with?
00:00:51 Ben
It was basically being an ambassador I really dealt with and I worked with Sian a whole lot at that point in time. So, interviews, giving people an opportunity to volunteer. That time helped me to also understand other cultures and people. So, yeah.
00:01:09 Belle
Amazing.
Are there any standout memories that you have from working with Discovery?
00:01:15 Ben
Meeting people, basically. I mean, you meet, like I said, people from all walks of life, different backgrounds, different personalities, different views of life, which sort of broadens your horizon as well because you get to know how other people think from other places.
00:01:31 Belle
And would you say that volunteering has helped you develop skills in your career? So, did you use Discovery in your CV?
00:01:38 Ben
Yeah, absolutely. After the ambassadorial role, then I'm currently a trustee. So, I've used that in certain job applications, and I've had to highlight that people skills part of being a volunteer and so it's come in handy in job applications basically.
00:02:02 Belle
So, if you were to give any advice to someone looking to volunteer what would you say or like what skills do you think that it would bring them?
00:02:10 Ben
I think anyone who volunteers has nothing to lose because I mean I think you even stand more to gain in the sense that you get to interact with other people, you get to learn how things work with other people. You get to be, you get to have that room to understand other people basically and then give allowance for people's behaviours and people's personalities basically. So, which is quite good.
00:02:37 Belle
Amazing.
And just to conclude the interview then, if you were to describe Discovery in one word, what would you use?
00:02:43 Ben
That's an interesting question.
I would say... I would say inclusive.
00:02:51 Belle
Inclusive. Amazing.
Well, thank you so much for speaking with me today.
00:02:54 Ben
No problem.
Thank you.
00:02:55 Belle
Thank you.
