TORPEDOED. MORE STEAMERS SUNK
Seven of the Crew Killed. The trawler Osprey landed at Milford Haven on Saturday 21 of the crew of the Manchester steamer Ellesmere, homeward bound from Valentia with a general cargo. The skipper of the rescued crew reports that on Friday afternoon, when 55 miles south-west of the Smalls, a submarine came up and began shelling them.
The submarine fired ten shots, one of which killed a Norwegian fireman named Jensen. The crew all got into one boat, the others being smashed. The submarine then put a torpedo into the Ellesmere and sank her.
The "South Wales Echo" states that the captain of the Ellesmere reports that after sinking his ship the submarine went off and attacked another vessel, seven of the crew being either killed or drowned, and the vessel torpedoed. The remainder of the crew were taken on board an American ship and conveyed to Liverpool.
Interviewed, one of the Ellesmere's crew said: "It is a pity we did not have a gun astern of our ship, for the submarine presented a fine target for us."
