The ss. Sallagh, of Belfast, has been sunk. A submarine appeared, and without giving any previous warning commenced firing.
The engineer (Mr. W. Mackay) was coming up from the engine-room when he was struck with gunfire and killed instantaneously. William Penny and Samuel Coalter, two of the crew, were badly injured.
The small boats were riddled with shot, and the men were nine hours in the boat before being picked up. The boat in which they had been was full of water, as she was holed. The crew numbered eight.
