Charles Pope Royal Navy (1918 to 1945 )
This collection records for posterity the service to the United Kingdom of Mr Charles Pope (deceased 1900 to 1980) formerly of Cowbridge, Wales. The record of service that can be viewed in the collection, offers the reader a unique chronological record of Charles' long career, in which he rose to the the office of Chief Stoker (PDF format). The reader will note Charles' active service in both world wars and hear of the part Charles played, in the dramatic combined services raid on islands off the coast of mainland Norway in December 1941 (Operation Archery). The collection has unique photographs that Charles either took himself, or was present when the photographs were taken. Included are some truly historic images of Sir Winston Churchill, accompanied by Lord Mountbatten aboard ship in wartime. The collection and Charles' service in the Royal Navy is evidenced by his original service record, dating from 1918 through to September 1945 and the impressive set of medals he was awarded. The author of Charles' career story, has researched open sources, which offer insight and bring to life the amazing story of this Welsh serviceman. Age Cymru Dyfed acknowledges these sources and thanks Charles' surviving son Edward, himself a Royal Navy Veteran, for presenting the photographs and documents that are safely in the custody of the family.
