A programme for a production of Mendelssohn's 'Elijah', the first performance by Cardiff Municipal Musical Society.

The programme consists of four A5 pages printed in black and white. The performance was held on 6 November 1943, at Wood Street Congregational Church, Cardiff, accompanied by Cardiff Philharmonic String Orchestra. The concert proceeds were to aid Cardiff Royal Infirmary hospital.

Cardiff Municipal Musical Society was formed in 1943 by employees of the Cardiff Corporation whose objective was to foster music and drama in the city. It was initially composed of four sections: choir, operatic, orchestra and drama group. Members of the society paid a subscription. The choral section gave its first concert in May 1943 with a production of Mendelssohn's 'Elijah'. The operatic section held its first production in 1945 at the Prince of Wales Theatre, St Mary Street, with a performance of 'The Mikado'. The society held performances at this venue until 1957, when it moved to the New Theatre where it then performed over thirty shows before moving to the Sherman Theatre. The name Cardiff Municipal Operatic Society was adopted in 1980. The Society was active up to 2012.
