Disgrifiad

The last day at the old Rhayader fire station (now the carpet shop, East Street). Brecon and Radnor joint Fire Brigade the day after it changed over to Powys Fire serrvice. These photographs are scanned from a collection of slides. If there was a fire an airraid siren would sound during the day and the firemen had a bell in the house for night time calls. A practice siren would sound at 18:30 every Thursday; this may have been for 'drill'. The modern fireservice continues to drill at this time. The fire station saw life as a wholesalers and a fruit and veg shop prior to becoming a carpet shop. PHOTOGRAPH 3c - Eric Turford and Les Griffiths. PHOTOGRAPH 3d - Tudor Ingram (on telephone) and John (Harpy) Llloyd. The Fire Engine is still registeredwith the DVLA although untaxed since 1996 and with no MOT; location is currently unknown
