people say they had no arms - Jones told them to go to the Race Course
that night and there would be plenty of arms there - He mentioned
Williams of the Blaina as having a great number of Guns and pistols
and about 1500 pikes coming home that night - He then told them to
collect themselves together and begin about 2 o'clock to force all they could
to go along with them to the Race Course - He said "prick them -
along with your pikes and make them come" He further said that
the next day there should be Placards posted up in Newport -
announcing whatever was requisite and which should begin with
"We the Executive Government of England" and that they should be
signed John Frost President" - He then ordered me and some others
to go to Chapman's the Confectioners and to tell him that the old Lady would
be down about 7 o'clock that evening and he Chapman must meet him,
Jones at Pontypool that evening on the race course - I gave the message
& then went back to Pontypool - I went to the Race Course between 10
& 11 and on the road fell in with Jones and others - they were most of them
armed - I attempted to go away but was forced to go with them to the
new Inn (Prossers) The House was full of armed men and I saw Jones
come in - he ordered the men out and told them they were to go on
to Newport in three parties the pikes first Guns next and the others with
what weapons they could muster - I made my escape and went home to Bed
I know George Shell of Pontypool Cabinet Maker he worked for
Mr Platner a cabinet maker at Pontypool - He was a secretary to a
Chartist Lodge - I have seen him at the Lodge - I have seen him
enter the names of persons in a book - I have also seen him making
out an account of his work - I know his handwriting - I have seen
a Letter addressed to Mr Shell Bristol - I believe that to be in the
handwriting of George Shell - I have heard that George Shell went with the
mob to Newport and was killed at the Westgate and that his Body
was one of the dead bodies at the Westgate -
