“NOT A GERMAN, ARE YOU?”
ABERAYON BENCH AND CHILIAN SEAMAN.

At Aberavon on Thursday, Gwilliam E. D. Steenbacker, a young Chilian, described as a seaman, appeared on two charges, viz, with failing to register himself as an alien and with giving a false name to the boarding-house keeper.

P.S. Swaffield said on Tuesday, the 24th inst., he met defendant in Water-street, and charged him with being an alien. He subsequently took him to the police station. When charged defendant replied, "I have registered myself at the boarding-house."

Eleanor David?on, Victoria-road Boarding-house, said that defendant came to the lodging-house on the afternoon of the 3rd inst. He registered himself under the name of "E. D. Gwilliam" on the book, and witness told him to go to the police station to register himself as an alien.

The Chairman: How long have you been in this country?

Defendant: Three weeks. I came from the Continent on the sailing ship County of Linlithgow.
Clerk: Yo uare [sic] not a German, are you?

Defendant: No; I am a Chilian.

He was remanded in custody for a week.
