Mary Dore painted this : the Spirit of the International Eisteddfod as part of the series of works celebrating the history and culture of Wales which has been on exhibition at the Senedd and elsewhere . She painted the series as a 'Thankyou to Wales ' for giving her and her family a safe place to live after they had arrived as refugees from falling bombs . Mary grew up in Llangollen and attended the Eisteddfod and later was part of the flower -team decorating the stage . The white dress of the Spirit resembles the Great Marquee and the flags she holds in her arms echoes the flowers presented at the opening Ceremony and represent the flags of the world . The Eisteddfod was founded by an ex-soldier to promote peace and uderstanding among the people of the world through dance and song.
