The picture portrays a miner at work below ground . The figure is deliberately androgynous in recognition of woen and men having worked as miners . The figure is also ageless and the clothing could be of anytime as mining went on for centuries in Wales. The faces in the coal seam represent the many miners who died - miners' safety not being a priority for mine owners . The painting is part of the permanent exhibition at the Miners' Memorial Centre in Wrexham . Mary Dore painted it as part of her series of paintings celebrating the history and culture of Wales which she called 'Thankyou to Wales '.
