Sail plan of Ellen Bates, (full rigged ship). 1850s
Disgrifiadau
Ellen Bates, a square-rigged three-masted ship. This ship, built in Neath Abbey, was the first iron-hulled sailing vessel over 1,000 tons. Neath Abbey Ironworks is rightly called ‘the cradle of iron shipbuilding’. Note the standing Spencer gaff used for setting a loose-footed Spencer sail, which brailed into the main mast.
