A leaflet promoting Charles Street Arts Foundation, Charles Street, Cardiff, c1990
Disgrifiadau
An A4 leaflet promoting Charles Street Arts Foundation, printed in blue on white paper and folded three ways. It is thought this document is from around 1990, as it accompanies other documents from that date in the archive.
The front of the sheet includes:
- The front cover, with an elaborate illustration of a building including stylised people, craft tools, and a keyboard. A circular inset shows a drawing of a tower from St David's Cathedral of Charles Street. To the side of this is written in capital letters: "Charles Street Arts Foundation" and "Cymdeithas Gelfyddydau Heol Siarl".
- A form to apply for membership.
- A description of how the Foundation is funded and how it "depends for most of it's [sic] finance on members subscriptions, and on the goodwill of others to provide their time, goods and services at as little cast as possible. From 1985 to 1988 the Foundation had funding to run an office and had the services of staff from the City Council's Community Programme Agency. This enabled the organisation to greatly expand it's activities, providing work for artists and musicians and trained many of them to go onto worthwhile jobs in the arts. Sadly, this scale of funding has not been matched since then and today the Foundation is a completely voluntary body."
- The final 'Over to You' section invites readers to become a member.
The back of the sheet includes provides information about Charles Street Arts Foundation. The various sections are:
· What is the Charles Street Arts Foundation: "A voluntary organisation active in community arts since 1984"
· Why community arts? “We aim to bring the arts and the local community closer together encouraging people from all walks of life to participate…”
· Events and Performances: In addition to the Festival, launched city’s longest continuous running community event, the Charles Street Carnival, the Foundation promotes a variety of activities including music, the visual arts, poetry readings, music and dance, silk-screen printing, art and pottery and creative writing.

· What’s special about Charles Street?
In June 1977, Cardiff Community Concern started the Charles Street Carnival as a community groups' alternative celebration of the Queen's Silver Jubilee. This became an annual event and grew into a separate organisation, Charles Street Arts Foundation. The Foundation came to employ artists and staff but was founded and run by volunteers. Cardiff Community Concern, also founded and run by volunteers, was an alternative advice and information centre for young people, based in 58 Charles Street.
