Disgrifiad

A poster for the Open Air Service at St Samson’s Church, Pentre Street, Grangetown on Sunday 15 June at 3.00pm. The service was organised by Grangetown Community Concern as part of Grangetown Festival Week. The order of service is also included in the archive. The cover of this shows the courtyard of the church at the junction of Pentre Street and Dinas Place.

The church of St Dyfrig and St Samson dates from 1911, but only a small part of what was intended - a section of what would have been the nave – was built and it was left unfinished. The dedication was extended in 1969 to commemorate the church of St Dyfrig after its demolition. (www.coflein.gov.uk/en/site/14224/details/st-samsons-church-pentre-gardens-grangetown)

This is one of a set of five A4 posters advertising the 2003 Grangetown Festival Week. Other posters in the set were ‘Carnival Day’, ‘Teddy Bears Picnic’, ‘Inter Schools Sports’ and ‘Past and Present Baseball Game’. Other events during the festival included an art exhibition and a school concert.

Grangetown Community Concern is a voluntary group, partly funded by Cardiff Council but almost entirely run by volunteers. It was established in 1977 and is a registered charity. The group was set up as an umbrella group for other voluntary organisations with its aims and objectives to provide and encourage services for all age groups, with a particular focus on older people.

The group organises the week-long Grangetown Festival in June. It also organised lunches and trips for older people, and produced a quarterly local newspaper. The organisation has awarded community cups to children from local primary schools who have shown community spirit and has also been responsible for arranging an annual carol service.

The group was renamed Grangetown Community Action in 2014.
