RCAHMW colour oblique aerial photograph of Ynyslas Gardens taken on 14/06/2004 by Toby Driver
This walled nursery garden, is first visible on the 1st edition OS map of 1889, its location adjoining the railway line. The garden was first constructed as part of the proposed development of a luxury upmarket resort town at Ynyslas, after the extension of the rail connections and development of a station at Ynyslas. The resort, comprising of a series of bungalows, villas and houses provided the need for a local supply of fresh produce. The Ynyslas Estate, owned by the Railway company sadly collapsed due to bankruptcy the entire estate was then sold including Ynyslas Gardens. The sales particulars published by R Gillart & Sons in relation to its sale on 17 September 1897 describe the property as ‘close to Ynyslas Railway Station ... a substantial brick built cottage residence, with extensive vineries, cucumber, tomato and peach houses… contained in all an area of 2 acres or 17 perches or thereabouts... well-cultivated, and is so advantageously placed that Markets Gardeners and all others would be enabled at all times to find a speedy transit and ready sale for the produce in the markets in the district as well as to the large towns."
