Letter from Josepha James in which she apologizes not being able to meet Mrs. Phillips. She explains she was very busy, and promises to meet her and her granddaughter when she goes to Pelotas. She and Alfredo send kisses to her granddaughter and Baby (?), and say that Mr. James, Mr. and Mrs. Lefebvre miss them.

Dear Mrs. Phillips

Much have I resented not being able to go give you a hug when I was there however it was impossible to me beause I arrived Saturday night very tired on Sunday I got up at 3 hours in the morning to go to the church therefore I have been very tired all day and always with visitors that made it impossible to leave and at night I went to the ball given to the Viscount of Porto Alegre and I came home at three hours in the morning and on the next day I embarked at 8 hours in the morning it was not by lack of will and yes because I did not have time but I promise you that the first time I go to Pelotas I will give you a veru tight hug and this will be very soon and wishes I had of seeing my poor goddaughter but soon I will be there. Have the kindness of recommending my comadre and my compadre and kisses on my goddaughter that her godmother sends her and on all the others.

Alfredo sends a kiss to his goddaughter and Baby as well.
Accept my many saudades from Mr. James Mrs. Lefebvre and Mr. Lefebvre and count on me,

Muito senti nao poder ter ido lhe dar um abraco quando la estive porem foi-me impossivel porque cheguei no sabbado denoite muito canssada no Domingo levanteime as 3 oras da manha para ir a Igreja de sorte que todo o dia estive canssadissima e sempre c[om] visitar que mesmo me foi impossivel sahir e denoite fui ao Baile dado ao Visconde de Porto Alegre e vim para caza as tres oras da manha e no dia seguinte embarquei as 8 horas da manha bem e que nao foi por falta de vontade e sim por mesmo nao ter tempo mais lhe prometo a primeira ves que for a Pelotas vou-lhe dar um bem apertado abraco e isto ade ser muito breve e bem desejos que tive de ver a minha afilhadinha coitadinha mais em breve tempo la estarei Tenho a bondade de me selo ..endor a minha comadre e meu compadre e beijinhos na minha afilhada que lhe manda sua madrinha e nos outros todos.
