Page seven of the Western Mail, Friday 11 September 1914, shows a series of photographs, including two (one split in two) showing the arrival of Belgian refugees in Cardiff. On 10 September, around 70 homeless refugee men, women and children from Malines and other Belgian towns arrived at the Great Western Railway Station (now Cardiff Central). Articles on page six of the same edition of the newspaper describe the satisfaction that there were sufficient offers of accommodation, the "genuine sympathy", "warm-hearted reception of the visitors", "touching scenes", "enthusiasm in the streets", and the welcome dinner and speeches at the Grand Hotel.
