Disgrifiad

Allan James's grandmother talking about school when she was young and later as a teacher.

Summary:
Exams were held at the end of each term. Sums were written on the board and the children copied them onto their slates. There was no paper or pencils. No Welsh was spoken, English was the language of school, even among the teachers. Welsh was supposed to be spoken at Sunday School and all services were in Welsh.
I spoke Welsh to my grandparents and to my mother-in-law. There were no Welsh schools anywhere. The children came home speaking English.
School cost thrupence (3d) a week. I and my three sisters were excluded from paying because we were orphans.
