Disgrifiad

Reconstruction drawing by Falcon Hildred showing exterior of Tŷ-Mawr, Nantmor, as it might have looked when first built. Note the absence of a chimney and the vent allowing smoke from the central hearth to escape. Tŷ-Mawr is a small, dry-stone house situated in Snowdonia on a level spot on the mountain slopes above Nantmor in the parish of Beddgelert. Although modest in appearance, the plan, features and the quality of its masonry and carpentry shows us that this was a small-scale hall-house of gentry-status. Tree-ring dating commissioned by the Dating Old Welsh Houses community project tells us the timbers used in its building date from 1529.

Curiosity in the very local history around Beudy Newydd, Nantmor. I am aware of the fact that there are historically significant buildings and remnants of controversial buildings in the local area, some of which have connections with former 'bards' (e.g.., Carneddu (spelling!). I have connections with the district but, as a geriatric, have little time to bone up on the local culture and history of this fascinating district of Wales.
