Poet, prose writer and painter Brenda Chamberlain (1912-1971) was born in Bangor where she was educated privately. In 1931 she moved to London and trained as a painter in the Royal Academy School. She then settled in Llanllechid, near Bethesda, with her husband. During the Second World War she worked on the production of the Caseg Broadsheets, a series of six publications which included poems by Dylan Thomas, Alun Lewis, Lynette Roberts and herself. Her marriage ended in 1946, and she travelled to Germany to stay with her friend Karl von Laer. The following year she went to live on Bardsey where she remained until 1961, writing and again painting, with the islanders as her subjects. Numerous poetry collections, prose works and a novel followed. In 1961 she moved to the Greek island of Ydra, an experience described in her published journal. She returned to Bangor in 1967 she returned to Bangor, depressed and with financial problems; it was there she died.
