Reg[in]a v[ersus] Turner William Johns in the employ of Mr W[illia]m Brewer Surgeon
Newport - between 16 & 17 years of age - says On Monday
morning the 4th November between 9 & 10 o'clock I was
standing in front of the Westgate Inn & on the pavement close
to Mr Neck the Pastry Cook's shop when I heard a hurra ing
on Stow Hill - I went to the bottom of the Hill and saw the
Chartists coming down - they were armed with various
weapons - Pikes Guns sticks &c - one or two had swords
When the Mob nearly reached the bottom of the hill I went back
to Mr Neck's shop - I saw the Mob wheel round
& front the Westgate - one man with a sword marched
on the left hand of the foremost rank -
He flourished his sword about and told some boys who
were in front of Mr Jenkins's Shop (next but one to Neck's]
to go away - almost immediately afterwards - the mob fired
& I heard the windows smashed - I saw one of the Mob
fall and then thought it time to run away - I went round Mr
Lloyd's corner as I went round I saw the prisoner - he was
loading his Gun - ramming something down - I stood about
a yard behind him - As soon as he had loaded his Gun, he
went down Commercial St[reet] & I saw no more of him - he
walked away quietly - took his Gun in one hand & his Stick in
the other - He was dressed in a Fustian or
Flannel Coat & Jim Crow Hat
