Walter William Homan sworn. I am Superintendent
[blank space] of Police at Tredegar. I
know the Prisoner Benjamin Richards. I caused him to be
apprehended. Always considering the Prisoner to be a Constable
I asked him if he knew the Charge on which he was apprehended
he said no he had done nothing and no one could charge him
with having done anything, he never carried Arms, a Man
came and called him from his house and he was bound to go
and that he did not go further than Stow Hill Newport -
I asked him no further questions but desired him to be
locked up. I saw the Prisoner on the Thursday previous to
the 3rd November. I may have Seen him, but I did not
notice him afterwards until he was apprehended which
was on Tuesday the 19th inst[ant], he lives near the Independent
Chapel at Tredegar. I had not been seeking him or searching
his house previous to Tuesday last. I don't know that the
Prisoner belongs to any Society, the Prisoner mentioned Stow Hill
to me.

John Jenkins sworn states. I am a Publican living
[blank space] at Newport. I know Benjamin
Richards the Prisoner at the Bar. I remember the day of the
Riots here. When the Mob, the Chartists, came to the
Westgate Inn I was standing at Mr. Mullocks Door. I saw
them turning round towards the Door of the Westgate Inn
there was a man with a sword in his hand who led them
towards the Front of the Westgate Inn. I hea[r]d firing
and then I ran away towards my House. I saw the Prisoner
that day. I saw him standing at my door, I believe it was
about 11 o'clock it may have been 12 I believe he had a
Pint of Beer at my House, it was about 2 hours I suppose
after the firing. I am not certain as to the time. I was rather
