Edward Dorey states that he is
a carpenter and lives in the parish
of Machen - That on Monday the 4th
Nov[embe]r last he was by the High Cross on the Turnpike Road</place>
leading from Newport to Risca & the Hills
sometime between 11 & one in the day
that he saw Jones the Watchmaker of
Pontypool coming up a hilly field on
the side of the Road and about 50
or 60 men with him had Guns &
Sticks - he came over the style with the
into the Road and stood - there were a number
of men on the Road running in a
direction from Newport - said
as some of the men were running
past him Jones said What is the man running away for
Doctor Price is going to meet me
with seven pieces of cannon - but
if the men don't stand true I
shall be hanged & as he was turning away towards the public house he heard men say the word "others" and he believes "Ringleaders" - the men who
were running away took no notice
of what he said but ran on -
Jones then went into the High Cross
public house - and I saw no more
of him - On last Wednesday week I
picked up a letter under my door stating
that I had better not go to Monmouth
as I must expect what would follow - there
was something red like blood on the letter -
