Decr. 30.th 1839
Sir
Jonas Williams our Police
Officer has just brought me your letter, requir
ing his presence at Monmouth on the 31st
as a witness.
I beg leave to acquaint you that he is
under a recognizance to attend at our Quarter
Sessions tomorrow, to give evidence against
two prisoners (on separate charges), and his tes
-timony is very material to their conviction -
indeed, in his absence, they would be discharged
by proclamation.
As the charge against Jones is not of the
higher class ,and as the graver charges against
the other prisoners at Monmouth will be proceeded
with in the first instance, I should under that im
-pression, and for the furtherance of justice here,
detain Jonas Williams over to morrow, and I take
Tudalen 2:
to be a special case that he wait upon
you on wednesday; feeling at the same time
perfectly convinced that his detention here
for the purpose I have stated, will neither
retard, nor be prejudicial to, the prosecution
of Jones.
I remain
Sir
your very obedient Servant
Henry Lucas M.D.
Mayor of Brecknock
-Phelps Esqr
at Monmouth
