As to Captains over 10
John Morgan Tredegar Collier lodged at the house
of William Evans at Tredegar Collier
About 7 o'Clock on Sunday Evening when the Chartist[s]
rose two men came to my house both Strangers and said
I must come along with them - there were many more
outside - I asked them where? the said 'twas no odds to me
I must come along - I went with them to Twyn Star (a
village about 1/2 a mile from Sirhowy) where a crowd were
assembled - Reece Meredith (one of the killed) was calling
over the names of the Witnesses - I only recollect two of
the names he called over - one David Jones the Tinker
& the other William Morgan - It was about 8 when we
moved from Twyn Star - We [?] came by Penycaer - We [?] did
not stop between Twyn Star & the Welsh Oak about 4 miles
from Newport - William Morgan was put over me
and several others as Captain - I never saw him before
but I asked who was that man and was told it was John
Frost - He was dressed in a rough dark frock Coat
and I think a red Cravat round his neck - I don't recollect
what Hat exactly but I think a black one - I quite recollect
he had a black ribband round his Collar but I did
not observe this until I was in the park - I went down
with the mob to the Westgate - I saw Mr Frost near the
Window where the Soldiers were - I had previously seen
him in the park ordering the men - I was about 5 or 6
yards from him at the Westgate - When I looked round
& heard him say "Fire" "Fire" "Fire" - I was then shot and
fell down & I saw no more of Mr Frost -
[indented] Herbert Davies
