Friars, he was coming up the road, I could not tell
whether he meant to go down towards the Town of
Newport or to go thro' the Turnpike Gate and towards
Bassaleg and Risca, it was a Very wet Morning, it
was dark. I asked him where he was going, and where
he had been, he would not at first Satisfy me and
said "what is that to you" I then took him to the
Turnpike Gate to the Gas light - I put my hand
under his coat I found it very Wet, I believe
he had on a black Velvet Jacket, I found his
shirt very wet, I said I must insist upon knowing
where he had been, he said he had been at St,, Brides
I did not examine for arms about him, I had no time
I took him into Custody, and sent him down to the
Westgate. - A large body of men marched into
Newport in the Morning of that day,- I should
think about 4 hours after I took the Prisoner, I saw
them, those I saw were armed, I saw nearly a
thousand pass my House in Commercial Street
I know the road they came in, the road they came
in was the same where I took the Prisoner, I saw
afterwards the place they attacked in Newport, I saw
it. It was the Westgate Inn, I was out of the House,
there was firing, I afterwards saw some dead bodies,
nine in all, I first saw one in the road and then
turned back to my house and sent my family out of
Town, the dead body was in front of the Westgate Inn.
I did not return to the Westgate until after the dead
bodies were placed in the Stable which was some
hours after, I went to the Stable and saw 9 dead
bodies there, I sent my wife, Child and all the
females of my family out of Town. I did so in
consequence of the excited state of the Town, I expected
there would be another attack & that Probably the Mob
would get Possession of the Town, and that the
Inhabitants would be injured, He said
