Francis Kynvin of Newport in
the County of Monmouth Painter
Plumber and Glazier -
I remember Monday the 4th
November last - I was sworn
in as Special Constable previously
to the Riots that occured at
Newport on that day - Benjamin
Gould - a painter in my Employ
& as I understood a
Special Constable was taken by me
at 1/2 past 8 o'Clock on the
Monday morning, to the Westgate
Inn I gave him a Staff - and
directed him to stop in the yard
at the back of the Westgate -
I took my station at the front door -
I remained there until I saw John
Lovell come down with the Rioters,
I immediately ran into the House
and told the then Mayor Sir
Thomas Phillips whom I met in the passage there was one
Man amongst the mob whom I

Benjamin Gould was not in the passage
at the time I went through, otherwise
I must have seen him - I went
throught the back door to the yard
where I saw Gould running up the
Steps leading to the back of the
Catholic Chapel - I said to him
Go on Ben get out of the way -

Whilst I was standing at the door with
the other Special Constables at the time the mob came down I heard
no groans from them (the Specials) nor any other
symptom of irritation -
