William Whitson - I am a Sawyer - I live at the
Gold tops in a Cottage there for which I pay an acknowledgment
to Mr Jones of Llanarth - I work for Messrs Matthew
& John Jones at their Ship Yard Newport - On the
Monday of the riots - about 1/2 pas 8 O clock in the morning & just
before I was going to Breakfast, I heard a hurraing which
I considered to come from the direction of the Cross Hands.
Whilst I was at Breakfast I heard a firing it appeared
to come from somewhere in the Town - After Breakfast I
went into my garden to raise potatoes - I saw some
men run across the fields towards my house -
they got over the style into my garden ran through
my Garden & over the hedge on the opposite side into
a field of Mr John Young's - They came up through
Mr Igguldons & Mr Perkins's fields - Five or 6 came
through my Garden but I know only two -
Joseph Hazell was one he was apprenticed to Mr Young
Shipwright of Newport - He had a Gun in his hand -
Charles Waters was the other - he had also a Gun in
his hand - I believe he worked for Mr Perkins -
I saw many other men running away in different
directions, but I should not know them again - some
Soldiers ran after them down a field behind the
[?] Price end of the Caira house [*] and then returned towards the
Poor house - ____________ The mark
