Herbert Davies (being sworn) states that he is a Collier that
he lives in the Parish of Monythusloyne and works at Waterloo Colliery-
about eight months ago he joined the Chartists that on Saturday the second
of November he attended a Meeting of the Chartists at the May Pole kept by
Henry Charles the Prisoner, David Stevens the younger told him that they
were going to Newport on Sunday night, he did not say this to the Meeting
but only to him, Thomas Morgan told them it was right to have a Chairman
and proposed David Stevens the elder and he was put in the chair he went
to some of his Friends and told them that the Chartists wanted to have ten men
together and the eleventh to look over them and he recommended them not to agree
to it, he told his Friends that they wanted to go to Newport to take the Soldiers
- he would not do it - that they were going to Newport to take the Soldiers and
and ^ that it would be on Sunday night, that the eleventh Man would know
the time and tell the other ten - it was in the room at the Meeting that
David Stevens the younger told him what he has stated. David Stevens the
elder after he had taken the chair said that all ought to be armed to go down
but did not say where. he would not tell then where they were to go until
all would raise up their hands and say they were willing to go when the
eleventh man would call that he was sworn, he and the other Men in the
room refused to do so and the Meeting separated, he was one of the last that
was in the room. He saw Henry Charles in the room once, this was before
the chair was taken. He heard from both the David Stevens's that the Country
were going to be armed. He went down to Newbridge on the Sunday after with
the mob he did not take any arms. fear made him go- he saw many armed
with Pikes swords and Guns. he saw David Stevens the elder and David Stevens
the younger with the mob they were close to him they were both armed with
Pikes. he told them he would go no further and left them. George Beach he
also saw with the mob he was armed with a sword. He never attended any
