Steve Hartley is the founder of Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre, New Quay. He now runs Dolphin Survey Boat Trips, however previously fished the waters of Cardigan Bay.
A member of our Living Seas Team sat down with Steve, to discuss his memories of life in the Bay. Here, he discusses seeing Porbeagle shark in the Celtic Deep.
Recollection as follows:
"A lot of sharks. I remember seeing nine or ten Porbeagle shark, in two-or-three trips. We did some very close together trips, with loads of sharks, in the early 90’s. And again, if you see one shark there’s probably ten down there – it’s a bit like rats. If you see a rat there’s ten - if there’s one shark, there’s probably dozens you’re not seeing.
And I always wanted to, I was actually talking to Marc-Rees about it the other day, I’d always say: what I’d love to do is go down to the Celtic Deep and chum out for 24 hours, because you’d never know what might come up. And obviously that’s what is happening now. They’re getting…there was a massive Mako caught down that way the other day, I think it was 800 pound – well they estimated, they didn’t land it. And they’re getting blue sharks down there."
