This bombing target was never intended to be used with actual bombs, but with a system that used cameras on the aircraft to determine where any bomb might strike. It was an earlier form of bombing simulator. RAF Brawdy never used the bombing range on Trevallen Down - it was built for the Fleet Air Arm when they had tenure of the airfield at Brawdy. RAF Chivenor used the range for a brief period in the early 1960s (?). Latterly the range area was again used by the Fleet Air Arm, but then mainly by assault helicopters from Yeovilton.
