Portrait of A Young Welsh Girl and sister at Senghenydd Colliery
Disgrifiadau
Oil painting on Canvas, from 'The Spirit of Wales' series I'm working on. Based on the photo entitled 'Welsh Pit Disaster. A little mother waiting for news', Senghennydd, 1913', with very kind permission from Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru / The National Library of Wales
14 October 1913, 950 men descended the mine shaft, hours later an explosion, 440 deaths; 60 victims were younger than 20, of whom 8 were 14 years old. The Senghenydd Mining Disaster is still the worst to date in Britain. Agnes May Webber age 13 waits for news holding her sister, as far as I can tell, she didn't lose anyone that day, but many did. So very sad!
We should never forget our Miners, they were the backbone of Wales.
