"Carmarthen, 23 Augt., 1843.

My dear Sir,

I regret extremely to receive the news you sent me by this day's post from Swansea. I cannot understand why Mr. Goring Thomas's property had been attacked. I have, it is true, no fund exactly applicable to the use you wish, but I will willingly be answerable for the amount of 100. Use it as you best can, and I will tell the Secretary of State what I have done. I shall be glad to hear anything else you may be able to tell me.

You do not mention the question of the meeting I heard it was likely would be held, as on Friday next, at Mynydd Selen. Did you not get my letter of the 22nd before you went to Swansea? I mentioned I had heard a notice had been put on the Chapel doors to announce it for 10 or 11 in the forenoon of that day. I wished to have information as to the exact spot where it was to be, and to know what may have passed at any of the former meetings, if you had authentic information.

I wish also to have some idea of what is felt by the Magistrates as to allowing the meetings to take place or not; but I think if they meet to petition, and it is attended by the farmers, and there are no arms, I would allow it, but I would also have persons there to find out the feelings shewn, and to report their observations for our future guidance. I also think it is a good thing to encourage meetings by day, so that night meetings might cease.

I am just going to write to Mr. Goring Thomas, who will be here, I think, on Saturday, and possibly after this event, at an earlier period.
