The Air Raid Precautions was created by the British Government to prepare for air raids four years before the beginning of the Second World War. They oversaw blackouts and inspected bomb damage. Whistles such as this one would have been used to signal air raids and the dropping of incendiary bombs. This example was issued to an ARP Warden in Bridgend. It is accompanied by a lapel badge which would have identified the individual as an ARP Warden.
