Disgrifiad

A papier-mâché Dr Barnardo's collection box in the shape of a cottage, front view. It is moulded in relief, and painted yellow, reddish-brown, green and black, with paper door (red) and windows (green). There is a slit in the roof for collecting coins. The box is inscribed 'Dr Barnardo's'. The box is thought to be mid-20th century and was donated to Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales on 21 October 1992 by Barnardo's, who were based at 11-15 Columbus Walk, Brigantine Place, Atlantic Wharf, Cardiff CF1 5BZ. The box is 12.5cm long, 11.5cm high and 9cm wide.

On the back of the box is a label for the collector to complete their details including box total to date, branch, member's name and their address. There is space for 'Date', 'Box Amounts', 'Subscriptions' and 'Received By'. There is also a warning that the box should only be used by BHL (Barnardo Helpers' League) and "should NEVER be taken from House-to-House or used for any form of Public Collection".

On the base of the box is a label (with circular brown stain) headed "Dr Barnardo's (Appeals Department - Barnardo Helpers' League)" and identifying the box as the property of Dr Barnardo's, giving instructions for the return of the box. The label also states, "IMPORTANT. You are reminded that this Box should be used only by B.H.L. Box holders and their friends. It is illegal to take it from House to House or to use it for any form of Public Collection. Cheques and postal orders to be sent to APPEALS DEPT (B.H.L.) TANNERS LANE, BARKINGSIDE, ILFORD, ESSEX."

In 1870, Thomas Barnardo opened his first home for boys in Stepney Causeway. By the time he died in 1905, the charity he founded ran 96 homes caring for more than 8,500 children. The charity changed its name in 1966 from Dr Barnardo's Homes to Dr Barnardo's. By the end of the decade, plans were made to close down large numbers of homes and to convert them into specialist units. In 1988, the organisation changed its name from Dr Barnardo's to Barnardo's to reflect the contrast with its Victorian past. The last traditional-style home closed in 1989.
