Behind the mask of carnival…
There is a rare chance to hear at first hand about the design skills of carnival mask and costume makers tomorrow night at Channel View Leisure Centre, Cardiff.
Katheryn Chan, who has worked extensively on float and costume designs for carnivals in Trinidad, will be giving a slide talk on her work at 7:30pm.
Trinidad is the home of carnival or Mas, a short form derived from the word “Masquerade.” It is also the base for Peter Minshall, whose Mas camp has carried off carnival prizes for many years.
Katheryn will talk about her work for Minshall and about the roots of Trinidad’s carnival tradition.
Today she was imparting some of her extraordinary skills to pupils at Mount Stuart Junior School in the docks, a workshop organised by Theatr Taliesin Wales.
