WE SAY

Who knew St John Ambulance was so involved in World War I - as we feature today, helping the injured when unarmed and often under heavy fire.

Such bravery and training has laid an important foundation for an organisation that remains so important in our communities today.

Volunteers are often the uncelebrated army of good work, the backbone of many a community, aiming to make a difference each day for those most in need. Many charities could not operate without them.

Today's New Year Honours give us a welcome opportunity to celebrate their contribution. We embrace this chance to say many, many congratulations and a heartfelt thank you to all those recognised.

And if you didn't quite make the list this time, be inspired and, if you don't volunteer already, make it your new year resolution.
