Handwritten letter from Robert Davies, founder of Voluntary Community Service (VCS) to Renate Hessenauer, a volunteer from Germany.

This is in reply to a letter card from Renate. Robert Davies gives a brief update in regard to current VCS projects, visiting the older and lonely people, the United Nations Association Reunion of Volunteers in London, and the national appeal for the Aberfan disaster.

Transcription:

"Dear Renate [Hessenauer],
Many thanks for your letter card which I received early in November. Please excuse my slowness in replying but I know that Alan Gracie wrote to you soon after to give you the address of SCI in Germany. Have you joined yet?
Last weekend Alan organised a work camp for visiting the old and lonely and at the same time distributed sacks of coal. It is now becoming quite cold and we expect snow for Christmas.
The UN Association Reunion of Volunteers takes place in London on January 7th. I will be attending with many others and we expect some people from abroad.
I was interested to hear in your last letter of your attempts at teaching. I trust your studies are now going well. What work are you doing in the shop?
There has been a national appeal for ABERFAN and over one million pounds has been collected. However a lot of us feel that so much money is unnecessary and consider for example that the action of Canada in sending a donation to the UN Children’s Fund was more sensible. (Aberfan is a very small village).
I send you every good wish for Christmas and the New Year.
Yours sincerely, Robert"

Robert Davies, who actively volunteered with VCS, UNA, and many other organisations, is currently VCS Honorary President. He founded Voluntary Community Service (VCS) in Cardiff in October 1964. The organisation's main aim, as stated in its constitution, is to promote any charitable purposes, advancement of education, and relief of poverty, distress, and sickness in the City of Cardiff. Originally VCS co-ordinated a team of volunteers involved in activities such as helping elderly people with gardening and decorating, running summer ‘work camps’ for children and young people. Its mission today is to enable people who are most disadvantaged to engage with rewarding volunteering opportunities, facilitating their personal development and employment prospects.
