A photograph taken at the front of St. Nicholas Police Station. Built in 1858 as one of the first purpose built police stations of Glamorgan Constabulary and located purposely on the A.48 trunk road.
The village of St. Nicholas is situated approximately 7 miles west of Cardiff city centre.
For several centuries, this road was an important and main route through south Wales. It was also a main coaching route connecting London with Pembroke Dock. Pembroke had become a strategically important town, and seen the construction and expansion of a large Royal Naval Dockyard.
Taken in about 1970, this photograph shows two 'Area' police Constables of the newly formed South Wales Constabulary. Both were members of the Glamorgan Constabulary prior to amalgamation in 1969.
The Constable to the right is Terry Grinter. He was the area policeman who lived with his family in the St. Nicholas Police Station.
The Constable to the left is my good friend Steve Ashby. Steve was the 'Area' Constable for Perterston Super Ely, who at that time lived with his family at the police house situated in that village.
The section of original building (white down-pipe and yellow curtains) was demolished some years. ago.
