Wing Commander Kelly Barnes on the left, with crew members including a Royal Navy intelligence officer on the right, the uniformed man is believed to be an Icelandic government representative. The crew were involved in a diplomatic incident. P9630 - still carrying the code letters 'WQ' of 209 Squadron on the tail - is pictured at anchor off the village of Raufarhoefn, Iceland, after landing there on September 26th, 1939. With a 228 Squadron crew, and captained by 228's C.O, Wing Commander Kelly Barnes, the Catalina left Pembroke Dock for Invergordon on the 25th and flew on to Iceland to reconnoitre the fjords for German vessels. Heavy fog caused Barnes to land off Raufarhoefn, in the district of Thingeyjarsysla, on the north east coast, and the crew later came ashore. This was the beginning of an escalating diplomatic saga which led, eventually, to Wing Commander Barnes being 'interned' in Iceland. The aircraft and crew returned to the UK on September 28th, leaving diplomats and politicians to wrangle over the issue, amid considerable press interest. An official message was delivered to Wing Commander Barnes by the Sheriff of Thingeyjarsysla (Pingeyjarsysla in Icelandic spelling). It declared that the 'leader of the English aeroplane' should, together with the crew, 'give themselves up to the disposal of the sheriffs bailiff.
