Disgrifiad

Royal Observer Corp look-out position on the roof of the Jersey Beach Hotel. Note the aircraft recognition photographs and the steel works in the background. The look-out post was later moved to Pentyla. At the outbreak of WWII standard Air Raid Precaution Regulations came into operation throughout the country but following the fall of France extra measures were taken in coastal areas. To deter air landings, (invasion by air), steel posts were driven into the sands at Aberavon Beach and a minefield was laid from the end of the Promenade towards Briton Ferry bend. The Jersey Beach Hotel was requisitioned and an Observer Corp Post set upon its roof (this was later moved to Mynydd Dinas). The hotel was occupied by British, Dutch and American troops at various times. A barrage balloon was installed alongside Victoria Road and an Anti-Aircraft gun and searchlight (which was machine gunned on one occasion) were positioned nearby.
