Portrait of a woman in a Welsh hat over a goffered cap; bold check shawl; long-sleeved, short-tailed bedgown of striped fabric, check apron, red skirt, stockings and shoes. She has a walking stick in one hand and a bell in the other, used to alert the public that she is about to make an announcement. Caernarfon castle is in the background. The hat is a north Wales type with almost straight vertical sides, distinct from the flat-topped conical shape found elsewhere. By the time this painting was produced, traditional costume was being worn by young women only for special occasions, but some elderly women continued to wear it out of habit as in this case.
