DAVID T. LEWIS (1805-1855)
The Reverend David T. Lewis, first minister of Salem Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Church in North Ebensburg, Pennsylvania, U.S.A., was baptized 20 August 1805 in Llangwyryfon, Cardiganshire, Wales. His parents, Margaret and Thomas Lewis, lived at Bugeildy farm in Llangwyryfon parish.
On 28 December 1827 in Llangurig, Montgomeryshire, David Lewis married Jane Davies (baptized 20 September 1807 in Llangurig). He was said to have preached at Capel Uchaf in Llangurig and Capel Neuadd in Llanidloes.
The Reverend Edward Jones, in Cincinnati, Ohio, convinced David Lewis to emigrate from Wales to the United States in July 1837. After a short stay in Granville, Ohio, David Lewis and his family settled in Oak Hill, Ohio from August 1837 to 1840. After preaching in Oak Hill (at Centreville and Moriah churches on his Sunday circuit , as well as at Horeb and others in that area), David Lewis was introduced by The Reverend Robert Williams of Moriah in September 1840 to the Calvinistic Methodists in the Synod of Cambria, Pennsylvania to serve as minister of the new Salem Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Church at Ebensburg. The Reverend David T. Lewis was an organizer of the Ohio Gymanva in 1838 and an incorporator of the Welsh Calvinistic Methodists in the State of Ohio in 1841.
The Reverend David Lewis served as minister of the Salem Church in Ebensburg from 1840 until his death, 10 February 1855. Jane Davies Lewis died 19 June 1878 in Ebensburg. They had ten children, five of whom were born in Wales: Jane (born 1828), Thomas D. (born 1831), John D. (born 1833, buried in Wales), Mary L. (born 1834), and John D. (born 1836, buried in Granville, Ohio). David D. (born 1838) was born in Oak Hill. The remaining four were born in Ebensburg: Margaret (born 1841), Joseph (born 1843), William (born 1845), and Jonathan (born 1847).
