Cultivated apple trees are descendants fo the wild crab apple and the Romas probably introduced the cultivated species into Britain. Government agricultural statistics of 1886 stated that Herefordshire possessed 27,110 acres of orchard, followed by Devon (26,414) Somerset (23,640), Worcestershire (18,527) and Kent (18,296). Apple trade was great industry in USA at this time, fruit being dried, preserved and exported all over the world. This item was first published in the Illustraded London News, 1810, p572.
