Pontypool Park was the home of the Hanbury family. However, in 1920 it was handed over to the Pontypool, Abersychan and Panteg Urban District Councils by Mr. John Capel Hanbury, the last squire of Pontypool.
The Rustic Bridge crossed the Afon Llywd, linking the Italian Gardens with the wide open spaces of the Park.
