Disgrifiad

The Machynlleth Borough Guide turns up Heol Maengwyn and highlights the Calvinist Methodist Chapel.

The Maengwyn Methodist Chapel was originally built in 1784 at the start of the main period of non-conformity growth in the town. Eleven chapels were eventually built.

The Maengwyn Chapel was rebuilt in 1822 and again in 1867 to a design by William Henry Spaull of Oswestry at a cost of £3500. The present chapel is built in the Gothic style, with a gable entry plan, integral tower and ogee-headed windows with diamond glazing. Stone from the Talerdigg railway cutting was used in the construction, with the front and sides featuring contrasting sandstone from Ruabon in Clwyd. The chapel has a seating capacity for 700 and is now one of the town’s listed buildings.
