Many older residents recall the ‘Whitsun Treat’. Back in the 1960s this was an annual outing on Whit Monday (the day after Pentecost) held in the fields at Caerau hillfort. Residents recall as children sitting on the back of a lorry being taken up to the field next to St Mary’s. One local resident recalled “Thinking back the adults must have had a busy time planning and organising the Whitsun treat. The weather was always unpredictable. There was a fair and games and sporting events. There was always food with mothers volunteering to make cakes and prepare sandwiches.” Fragments of coconut shell found during the recent excavations at the hillfort may be the remnants of those fairground games!
