1826
oil on canvas
Thomas Assheton-Smith of Y Faenol, near Bangor was one of the leading 'Improvers' of his generation. He enclosed his estates and rebuilt Faenol in a neo-classical style. He constructed roads, cottages and a harbour, and between 1809 and 1826 he developed the great Dinorwig slate quarry. By 1826 he employed 800 quarrymen, producing 20,000 tons of slate. He was MP for Caernarfonshire from 1775 to 1784.
As a young man he had been painted by Nathaniel Dance, but this portrait shows him in old age. It was commissioned by the Caernarfon Corporation for the Grand Jury Room at Caernarfon and it was later removed to Y Faenol. William Beechey had a long and successful career as a portraitist. He painted George III and George lV, and was made portrait painter to Queen Charlotte in 1793.
