Gwyn Jones

Gwyn Jones (1907-1999) was a scholar, novelist and short-story writer. He was born in Blackwood and educated at University College, Cardiff. This was followed by teaching posts in Wigan and later Manchester, during which time he published a translation, Four Icelandic Sagas (1935), and a novel. Jones returned to Wales in 1935 as a Lecturer in the English Department at University College, Cardiff. Therefater followed a profusion of novels, short stories and translations. He founded The Welsh Review in 1939, and in the following year became Professor of English at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. He collaborated with Thomas Jones in a new translation of The Mabinogion, published in 1949, which was followed by other important translations. From 1964 until his retirement in 1975, Gwyn Jones held the Chair of English at University College, Cardiff. For his contribution to saga and Viking studies he was awarded the Order of the Falcon by the President of Iceland in 1963 and the Commander's Cross of the Order, Iceland's highest honour, in 1987.
