A Stream Through the Ages — The Story of the Lloyd and Emmanuel Families: Nine Centuries, Two Bloodlines, One Story

Disgrifiadau

Where do I begin I am Graham Tudor Emmanuel. I live in Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire. This is my story, and it is Linda's story, and it begins as all the best stories do with something I did not see coming.

Linda was my wife. She died on 4 July 2015. Her last words to me were go and travel. So eventually I did a campervan, a Jug dog called Lizzy, the Wild Atlantic Way. I got lost on a road in County Mayo and taught myself digital mapping trying to find my way home. That was the beginning of everything.

I was born in Trimsaran, three miles from Kidwelly. Linda was born in Pontypool. We met in Usk, married, and in 2005 we came to Kidwelly the town where Gwenllian ferch Gruffudd, warrior princess of Deheubarth, fell in battle at Maes Gwenllian in 1136. We had no idea, when we arrived, what that meant.

Three years after Linda died I discovered, while researching my family history, that Linda was Gwenllian's 24th great-granddaughter. Two months ago I found that I descend from the same royal house through a separate branch my line running back through the Lloyd family of Cardiganshire to Cadifor ap Dinawal, Lord of Castell Hywel, who took Cardigan Castle with hooked ladders and was given a daughter of The Lord Rhys in marriage around 1165. Gwenllian was The Lord Rhys's mother. Our two bloodlines meet at his court, nine hundred years before we met in Usk.

Linda never knew any of it. She was also the Treasurer of Cofio Gwenllian, the local group working to establish a statue in Gwenllian's honour here in Kidwelly spending her time campaigning to memorialise her own ancestor without the slightest idea that was what she was doing.

What are the odds. Nearly a thousand years, and it ends here, in this town, with the two of us.
